MGM MIRAGE’s Debra Nelson honored
with well-known Southern women leaders
LAS VEGAS – Debra Nelson, vice president of corporate diversity and community affairs for MGM MIRAGE, was honored recently by the Southern Women’s Leadership Development Institute (SWLDI) during an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the famous bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala. that launched the modern-day civil rights movement.
Nelson, an Alabama native who is now based in Las Vegas, was one of 18 prominent Southern women honored for making their mark in business, politics and other fields. In addition to Nelson, these daughters of the South included civil rights leader Coretta Scott King, U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleeza Rice, Mae Jemison, the only African-American woman astronaut to travel into space, and Alexis Herman, a native of Mobile, Ala. who served as the 23rd U.S. Secretary of Labor and is now on the board of directors at MGM MIRAGE.
Organizers noted Nelson’s civic work in the state of Alabama as well as her contributions in helping launch the state’s first major automotive manufacturing facility. She has earned numerous awards for corporate and community service. Her volunteerism has included organizations such as the Detroit Discovery Museum, Salvation Army, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, United Cerebral Palsy, UNCF/College Fund and the Association of Black Women in Higher Education. In Nevada, she serves on the boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada.
Nelson and her fellow honorees were recognized during a Dec. 3 SWLDI awards luncheon at the Union Station Train Shed in Montgomery, Ala. The event was timed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic bus boycott in that city.
The SWLDI was established in Montgomery, Ala. in 2004 to provide “women power” to combat the inequalities of race, class and gender. The mission of the SWLDI is to inspire, cultivate and train women and youth with leadership potential to bring about a more disciplined approach to problem identification and resolution of issues that impact our nation’s families.
