Diversity Leader Honored by American Indian Chamber of Commerce
Debra Nelson recognized as "2007 Contributor/Supporter of the Year"
LAS VEGAS – November 20, 2007- Debra Nelson, MGM MIRAGE Vice President Corporate Diversity, Communications & Community Affairs, is recipient of the "Golden Eagle Feather Award" from the American Indian Chamber of Commerce. Presented at the recent Golden Eagle Awards Gala in Las Vegas, the award recognized Nelson for her contributions, on behalf of MGM MIRAGE, to the Native American community.
"Since making Las Vegas her home nearly three years ago, Debra has been an advocate for inclusion of Native Americans," said Debra Sillik, President of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce, "However, rather than being unique, this is typical of Debra's commitment to truly live the values of diversity that she espouses."
The Golden Eagle Feather Awards are designed to recognize the important contributions of individuals who have positively impacted Native Americans and Alaskan Natives locally and nationally. Nelson was honored for promoting business and employment opportunities; for being an advocate for the rights of Native Americans on issues that affect them; and for contributing to programs that support education, health, and minority business development. Award nominees are selected and voted upon by the members of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce.
Nelson is recipient of numerous awards for corporate and community service, a result of her active roles in several non profit organizations. Her local board service includes the Community Colleges of Southern Nevada, Urban Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada, Nevada Hand and the 100 Academy of Excellence. She is a founding board member of the Chief Diversity Officers Roundtable at Cornell University. In Nevada, she created the Diversity Professionals Network, a group that meets quarterly to network, share best practices and explore ways to enhance the role and scope of the diversity profession. In August this year, she was the catalyst behind Las Vegas' first-ever Women of Color Conference, an event that brought together the Latin, Urban, Asian and American Indian Chambers in an effort to serve the development of women in the greater Las Vegas community.
